The 2019 World Series of Poker launched on Wednesday when WSOP organizer Jack Effel announced “shuffle up and deal“. 2019 marks the 50th Anniversary of the World Series of Poker, which will mark the milestone in a number of ways.

This year, the tournament includes 89 different poker events, which easily exceeds the record of 78 from a year ago. Eighty of the scheduled events are live poker events, while another nine take place at WSOP.com. Even the online card events come with a WSOP gold bracelet, though.

Of course, Texas Hold’em (“The Cadillac of Poker”) dominates the schedule with 51 events in all. As always, the WSOP scheduled a fair share of Omaha, Seven-Card Stud, Razz, and H.O.R.S.E. events.

Wednesday began with the $500 buy-in Casino Employees’ Championship, which is the traditional Event #1 at the World Series of Poker.

Event #2 was the $10,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em Super Turbo Event, which draws high stakes players. Brian Green of Decatur, Texas won the event and took home $345,669.

2019 WSOP Entry Fees

Twenty of this year’s events feature buy-in fees of $10,000 or more. Such events cater to the professional poker players with sponsorships, as well as high rollers. The WSOP Main Event still costs $10,000 to enter. Most excect the main event to draw upwards of 7,000 players.

Five-four events have a buy-in of $1,500 or less, so amateur fans have plenty of chances to win a gold bracelet without spending 5 figures. Top players will dot the lower buy-in events this year, because several believe they are the key to winning the WSOP Player of the Year race.

Lower Buy-Ins at WSOP

Nearly one-third of the aforementioned events (17) have a buy-in of $888 or less. Almost half of the lower entry fees come from the online poker tournaments. The lowest buy-in is $400, while the highest buy-in is $100,000.

A half-dozen scheduled events are “deepstack” poker events. Deepstack events have a relatively high chip stack compared to blinds or antes, so they require special strategy. They are considered to involve less luck, so good players should have the advantage. At the same time, deepstack events take longer to win, so the bang-for-buck might not be worth it to many top card players.

Big 50 $500 No-Limit Hold’em Launches Friday

The Big 50 $500 No-Limit Hold’em (Event #3) replaces the Colossus Event this year. In the last few years, the WSOP’s organizers wanted a huge event with thousands of players in the first couple of week. That gave rise to Colossus, Colossus II, and Colossus III.

The Big 50 event costs only $500, but has three flights and draws thousands of players. After Flight A, the event still has 5,900 entrants.
